Moonshot Museum begins 2022 having raised more than $1.7 million against its $2.7 million campaign to open a “living lab” built to inspire young people to find their place in the future of space exploration.

Moonshot Museum announced significant end of year gifts in support of its campaign to open the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s first space museum in Q3 of 2022. These transformational gifts will have a great and lasting impact on Western Pennsylvania’s space ecosystem and directly support Moonshot Museum’s mission of inspiring young people to find their place in the future of space exploration.
Generous foundation grants to support Moonshot Museum’s programming, operations, and construction include:
- $500,000 from the Henry L. Hillman Foundation to support Moonshot Museum media production and exhibition fabrication.
- $250,000 from the Allegheny Foundation to support Moonshot Museum construction and operations.
- $250,000 from the Howmet Aerospace Foundation to support Moonshot Museum construction and operations.
- $25,000 from the Buhl Foundation to support Moonshot Museum construction and operations.
- $25,000 from the Grable Foundation to support the development of Moonshot Museum programming.
- $25,000 from the Remmel Foundation to support the development of Moonshot Museum programming.
Moonshot Museum also received generous contributions from corporate partners including First National Bank, the largest subsidiary of F.N.B. Corporation, to support Museum construction and operations.
“These transformational gifts across the spectrum of exhibition development, construction, and innovative programming move Moonshot Museum exponentially closer to launching here in Pittsburgh later this year,” said Sam Moore, the Museum’s executive director. “We are deeply grateful to each of these organizations for their generous support as we work to open a Moonshot Museum built in, by, and with our Pittsburgh community.”
With these grants, Moonshot Museum has achieved more than 60% of its $2.7 million campaign to support construction and operations, having raised more than $1.7 million in 2021-2022. Operated by the nonprofit 501(c)(3) Astrobotic Foundation, Moonshot Museum will provide a front-row seat to the work of the 21st century space industry through a groundbreaking partnership with Astrobotic, which is poised to return America to the lunar surface with its Peregrine lander in 2022. Visitors to Moonshot Museum will embark on simulated lunar missions in a highly interactive museum environment, all against the backdrop of a wall of windows looking into Astrobotic’s Clean Room spacecraft assembly area.
